THE STORY: One night in 2017, Erik Rintamaki, a gem and mineral dealer in Michigan, was out walking along a Lake Superior beach with his UV light in search of fluorescent rocks to add to his collection. What he found was truly astonishing. He discovered dozens of glowing rocks he couldn’t identify. Curious to know what composite of minerals caused them to glow under his UV light, he brought a few home with him to do some research. In the meantime, he named his new discovery “Yooperlite”.

After sending several of the rocks to Michigan Technological University and Saskatoon University, Erik learned that they were Syenite rocks, rich in fluorescent Sodalite. The story of his discovery was published in Mineral News in 2018 and although he was not the first to find these glowing rocks, he was the first to have scientists confirm that there is indeed Sodalite in Michigan!

Erik’s discovery of Yooperlites has catapulted his rock and gem business, and he now takes groups down to the beach to hunt for these amazing stones.
