Mariners Are Warned! is the story of the six-year voyage undertaken by HMS Beagle as it sailed the uncharted coastline of Australia, commanded by John Lort Stokes. The mission was to chart the vast and lonely coastline of Australia in an attempt to reduce the trading losses through cargo ships foundering on hidden reefs and a hostile shoreline. Though Stokes was a sober, conscientious and earnest man, his actions were often foolhardy.
