This is for an original April 17 1964 ticket stub for the
New York Mets home opener and the first game ever played at their new home,
Shea Stadium. Sticking with their fine tradition, the Mets would lose their
first two road games of 1964 against the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Mack
Stadium in Philadelphia. Hoping their first game in their new confines would
change their luck, the Mets would go down in style 4-3 to the Pittsburgh
Pirates. Roberto Clemente would go 3-5 with 3 singles (hits 1427, 1428 and
1429) while Willie Stargell would go 4-5 with a double and his first home run
of the year and the 12th of his young career. The Mets would
actually be tied with the Pirates 3-3 in the top of the ninth but reliever Ed
Bauta would give up consecutive singles to Willie Stargell and Donn Clendenon
before Bill Mazeroski would drive home Stargell with a single of his own for
the game winner. Bob Friend would finish off the ninth for a complete game 4-3 victory.
The stub displays great and is a must have for
any Mets fan who remembers the orange and blue of the stadium driving through
the parking lot. Shea Stadium will always be remembered as being the home of
the Mets only two World Championships. Ya gotta believe.
