Story about the Design:
Rybaltchenko’s graphic “splatter” composition hides horses and riders that gradually appear as the eye adjusts—an intentional hide-and-seek that plays with perception and Hermès’s equestrian codes. Viewers discover emblematic house symbols, including the horse-and-carriage (duc attelé), nestled in the abstract field. The effect has been described as “horses and riders [emerging] from a cloudburst of color,” encapsulating the designer’s humor and modernity.

Artist's Story:
Dimitri Rybaltchenko is a Paris-based Hermès carré designer (since 1990) from a renowned Hermès art lineage—son of Vladimir Rybaltchenko and great-nephew of Philippe Ledoux. Beyond scarves, he has designed watch dials and accessories for the house. His style evolved from classic realism to a crisp, contemporary graphic language ideally suited to optical play—exactly what “Cheval Surprise” celebrates.

Collector's Notes:
“Cheval Surprise” is a collector favorite in its early two-tone palettes (including White/Red), then saw renewed attention with the 2016 “Remix.” The motif crossed into other Hermès creations—from canvas totes to a special-order Kelly spotlighted at auction—underscoring its status in the Hermès visual lexicon. The design also appears in museum collections, affirming its cultural interest.
