Marcel Breuer's Story
Marcel Lajos Breuer was a Hungarian-American modernist
architect and furniture designer, known for the Wassily
Chair and the Cesca Chair, which The New York Times have
called some of the most important chairs of the 20th
century.
His work includes art museums, libraries, college
buildings, office buildings, and residences, among which
are:
New York's Whitney Museum of American Art (1966)
IBM Research Center in La Gaude, France (1961)
U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development
in Washington, D.C. (1963–1968)
UNESCO
Headquarters in Paris (1958)
He is regarded as one of the great innovators of modern
furniture design and one of the most-influential figure
in "internationalism" – a major architectural style
dominant until the 1970s.
Cesca Chair
Marcel Breuer created the Cesca Chair shortly after
leaving the Bauhaus in 1928 and named it after his
adopted daughter Francesca. The chair consists of a
tubular steel frame, rattan seat and backrest and
inherently tied to the material innovation and design
principles he formed at the German design school.
While designing the chair, Breuer found inspiration in
the tubular steel construction of a bicycle.

made me interested in polished metal, in shiny
and impeccable lines in space as new components
for our interiors. I considered such polished
and curved lines not only symbolic of our modern
technology, but actually technology itself."

The Cesca chair was the first tubular-steel-frame,
caned-seat chair to be mass-produced. Now, the chair is
considered as one of "the 10 most important chairs of
the 20th century".

Solid Breuer chair seat and back replacements - precision assembly and tools required
Vintage and replica chairs that require these new seats all have different hole spacing, even if they are made by the same manufacturer it seems. That being said, make sure you have all the necessary tools and help to fit the seats and backs, and expect it to be a bit of a project. If you don�t feel handy, have a pro do it for you. The seats and backs themselves are well made and well caned. The cane is not stained so you can darken it if needed to match other chairs etc. overall a good product and quick shipping considering where it was shipped from! Overall a good value considering the cost to replace just the cane itself professionally.

The chairs are really sturdy and great quality. They shipped super fast, I think it got here 2 days after I ordered it. There is some assembly (drilling and screwing required) but if you're handy with a drill, it's really straight forward and easy. I was being careless and accidentally drilled through one of my arm rest and Ben sent me a new one the next day free of charge.

These saved me having to buy new chairs. They appear to be well made and are sized perfectly. I had to drill new holes to match the placement of my previous components. The caning is the weak part of these otherwise terrific, comfortable, stylish chairs, meaning it's usually the seat that needs replacing. When ordering replacements I would advise ordering seat AND back. Otherwise you run the risk of the wood colors not exactly matching.

These replacements for a classic chair worked out extremely well. They are marked precisely for the screws and they fit the original frames perfectly.
It would have been a shame to have to discard the chairs - and they are basically "new" now with a bit of muscle for attaching the screws myself -
should have had a power driver to make quick work of it.
