Marcel Breuer's Story
Marcel Lajos Breuer was a Hungarian-American modernist
architect and furniture designer, known for the Wassily
Chair and the Cesca Chair, which The New York Times have
called some of the most important chairs of the 20th
century.
His work includes art museums, libraries, college
buildings, office buildings, and residences, among which
are:
New York's Whitney Museum of American Art (1966)
IBM Research Center in La Gaude, France (1961)
U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development
in Washington, D.C. (1963–1968)
UNESCO
Headquarters in Paris (1958)
He is regarded as one of the great innovators of modern
furniture design and one of the most-influential figure
in "internationalism" – a major architectural style
dominant until the 1970s.
Cesca Chair
Marcel Breuer created the Cesca Chair shortly after
leaving the Bauhaus in 1928 and named it after his
adopted daughter Francesca. The chair consists of a
tubular steel frame, rattan seat and backrest and
inherently tied to the material innovation and design
principles he formed at the German design school.
While designing the chair, Breuer found inspiration in
the tubular steel construction of a bicycle.

and impeccable lines in space as new components
for our interiors. I considered such polished
and curved lines not only symbolic of our modern
technology, but actually technology itself."

The Cesca chair was the first tubular-steel-frame,
caned-seat chair to be mass-produced. Now, the chair is
considered as one of "the 10 most important chairs of
the 20th century".

Really uncomfortable and cheap frayed caning
These look nice but the caning is full of loose threads and broken cane. The worst part is that the pitch is way too upright making them very uncomfortable - when you try to get comfortable you just feel the the top bar in your back and your butt at the very edge of the seat, straining your back and making the seat feel too shallow- you don't know this, of course, until you assemble them! Totally disappointing , don't do it!

Great looking .. .BUT.... the caning on 3 of the 4 top pieces was crooked.. the difference is subtle until you see it against the table.. looks off. AND the holes for the screws are super small .. VERY hard to screw in by hand.. advisable to use a power screw driver.. trust..

These chairs are so nice! They�re such a nice classic look and really elevate the look in our kitchen. I also really like that you can easily order replacement backs and seats. I initially planned to buy these vintage, but the price for vintage was the same as new on this site! I also love that these arrived in pretty minimal packaging, only a few pieces of plastic wrap and one small sheet of bubble wrap- I absolutely hate trying to figure out what to do with a box full of styrofoam, so that made me happy! Assembly was pretty painless. The first chair was a little tricky, it�s a very hard wood and the pre-drilled holes were more of a suggestion than holes, so I carefully drilled the holes a little more thoroughly and then the seats went in really quickly. The holes on the back were better so I didn�t need to re-drill those. The whole process for 2 chairs was about 30 minutes start to finish. I can�t wait to save up and order a few more!

These are the best in every way! I am 70 and I was well able to get the backs on without a power drill. All the holes are predrilled. the seats were doable as I did one alone. the other 3 we used a power drill on slow. it's easier with two people but doable with one. im no spring chicken but so happy with these chairs, caine and solid wood. great quality! Caine you dig it!
