It may have been that the trick was too expensive to produce, since the card faces include the "metallic" effect that was used on Color Monte.  Or if not too expensive, maybe E&W needed all that special metallic "ink" to make thousands of Color Monte's so there was none left over for this gem of a packet trick, appropriately called GEMS.

Anyway, here is a very nice example of this very rare packet effect.  It came from new-old dealer inventory, but has some minor wear, either from dealer demo's or maybe just from years of the cards rubbing next to each other in the package.   It is complete as issued with all cards, instruction sheet, green vinyl wallet, outer vinyl sleeve, and even the Q card instructions cribsheet!    

It is an excellent routine, and (like most E&W packets from the 1970's and 80's) it has vanished into the oblivion of decades past.   So I was thrilled to find one in a large lot of dealer inventory.

EFFECT:  Magi shows four cards, printed with a "closed" jewelry box back design, and with an open jewel box on the face, each card featuring a different gem in the open box.   The cards are spread faceup and one jewel box face is now empty.   That card is turned facedown (closed jewel box facing up), and the cards are spread again.  Another of the open jewel boxes is now empty.  This card is turned down and the cards are spread again.   Yes, another of the open jewelry boxes is empty.  Again the empty is turned facedown, and the cards spread one more time to reveal the last faceup jewelry box to now be empty.   Then after you show all four open jewelry boxes to be empty ("the gems have been stolen!"), they suddenly reappear back in the boxes.  ("The crime is solved, and the stolen gems recovered!")  

The whole thing resets and is ready to go again.   As I mentioned above, the handling is very efficient, relatively consistent in each count and display, and looks super clean.   With a gaff or two from a standard gimmicked deck (that you might already have), you could apply this handling to change four regular Aces into matches for a chosen Jack of Diamonds, and then back.   Or with some blank cards, you could do an interesting printing effect.    Although the handling is well within reach of even a beginning card worker, advanced Cardicians will find a number of ways to use this handling.

NOTE:  I mentioned that the cards show a little wear or rub.  But there also seems to be a manufacturering defect, where ink from the printing on the reverse of the blue gem card is bleeding through and slightly visible from the gem side.  (see the 4th photo).   The dark line of the closed jewelry box is visible inside the open jewelry box above the blue gem.    This seems to be how the card was originally printed, and not the result of usage or wear.   (It is not "discrepant" since the spectators know that there is a closed case printed on the reverse.   And in performance, the line will probably not even be noticed by the spectators.)

Very hard packet item to find now.     Collector alert!
