The School of Painters of Poto-Poto is a painting school founded in the Poto-Poto neighborhood of Brazzaville by Pierre Lods in 19511.


Created in 1951 by Pierre Lods, a former French Resistance fighter during the Second World War, the Poto-Poto Painting School introduced young people to the principle of free creation. The learning method consisted of putting paper, brushes and gouache at their disposal without any particular technical orientation. But long before the arrival of this art enthusiast, painting was by no means unknown in the Congo.

Indeed, at the time of colonial penetration at the end of the 19th century, traditional Congolese societies were already practicing, with relish, graphics as a utilitarian mode of expression. For ritual purposes, they painted animals and other figures on the pediments and interior walls of the huts in order to ward off evil spirits and attract good ones.


It includes internationally renowned painters such as Marcel Gotène, François Thango, François Iloki, Philippe Ouassa, Joseph Dimi, Nicolas Ondongo, Jacques Zigoma, Eugène Malonga, André M'Bon and Michel Hengo.


Pierre Lods, nephew of Jean Lods, arrived in Brazzaville in 1949 accompanied by ethnologists who had come to study the pygmies of the Owando region2. He set up a painting workshop in 1951. Lods did not impose any artistic rules on his students, preferring to let them express their creative spontaneity. A small group composed of Faustin Kitsiba, Eugène Malonga, Guy Léon Fylla, Albert Bandila, François Thango, François Iloki, Philippe Ouassa, Nicolas Ondongo, Jean Balou and Hilaire Banza formed around Lods. Under the influence of Félix Ossali, Lods' first student, the Miké style, which means "small" in Lingala, developed. Composed of small characters with schematic and slender forms, it is reminiscent of the cave paintings of Tassili. According to Jean-Baptiste Tati-Loutard, the Miké style was in fashion between 1950 and 19542. This style, easily recognizable, is still today the signature of the school. It was copied throughout Africa.2 Recognition of the school quickly spread beyond the borders of the Congo. The first collective exhibition took place in 1952 at the Palmes gallery in Paris. The consecration takes place in 1955-1956 during the exhibition at the MoMA in New York. It was confirmed in 1958, when Lods sent several members of the Poto-Poto school to represent them at the World Fair in Brussels.




(The departure of Lods for Senegal after 1960 coincides with the independence of the Congo. With subsidies cut off, Nicolas Ondongo took over the direction of the school, which broadened the scope of its artistic research and organized itself as a cooperative to ensure its financial independence. The styles diversified, ranging from realism to fantasy. A new generation of artists such as Rémy Mongo Etsion, Sylvestre Mouandza, Michel Hengo, Guy Léon Fylla, Joseph Dimi, Marcel Gotène, Emile Mokoko, Jacques Zigoma, David Makoumbou, Adam Rolian Opou and Michel Miangounina quickly asserted their independence and represented in turn the shimmering world of the villages, the hunts, the wars, the dances, the savannah and the great forests.)
