The first coin in the new Australian Antarctic Territory Series features the emperor penguin. This first release depicts the emperor penguin in both Gold and Silver. Emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. Their diet consists primarily of fish. Emperors are endemic to Antarctica, including the Australian Antarctic Territory. Emperor penguins were once regarded as a species of least concern, and are now classed as near threatened, due to declining food availability from climate change and commercial fishing.
