A very rare and original WW2 The Lord Mayor's Leicester & County Spitfire Fund home front badge, number 25543. These badges were sold to raise funds during the Second World War. The badge depicts a fighter plane with an official number below. In very good condition, original pin fitting, colors are bright. 25 mm in diameter.
The money didn't really buy an individual Spitfire, but went straight into the government coffers, funding the war effort as a whole. Each type of badge was named after a locality or work group. The appeal was an immediate success with many areas funding not just one, but several fighters. To encourage and promote the scheme, donors could buy a celluloid Spitfire Fund badge.
