[The first production motocrosser to use a "flying suspension"] The Yamaha YZ250 production motocrosser was released as a replica of Yamaha's works machine for individual riders participating in motocross races. In 1973, Yamaha won the motocross world championship by equipping the works machine YZM250 with a new type of rear suspension called Monocross suspension. The following year, in 1974, Monocross suspension was also adopted for the YZ250 production motocrosser. This unique suspension supports a highly rigid truss-structured swing arm with a single shock unit, demonstrating excellent road grip and shock-absorbing ability and excellent running stability. In addition, the shock unit body is located under the fuel tank, and absorbs shock by transposing the vertical movement of the rear wheel back and forth. It dramatically increases the amount of wheel travel. Equipped with this rear suspension, which was called a "flying suspension", and a 32.5-horsepower 2-cycle 250cc engine, the Yamaha YZ250 achieved excellent results in motocross races around the world.
