The story of this movie on DVD is iconic.
The Last Chase is a 1981 Canadian-American dystopian science fiction film directed by Martyn Burke who was also the producer on the film, produced for Argosy Films. The film stars Lee Majors, Burgess Meredith and Chris Makepeace in a futuristic scenario about a former racing driver who reassembles his old Porsche and drives to California in a world where cars and motor vehicles of all kinds have been outlawed.
Lee Majors wanted to make films after the TV success of the $6 Million Man, which ended in 1978. Most of the films were low budget stinkers of the quality of The Last Chase. After this film, he went back to TV and starred in The Fall Guy.MST3K riffed the movie off of a VHS copy in 1989. The first DVD release for this movie was 30 years later in 2011, by CODE RED. For some unexplained reason, the dub sync of the DVD version was slightly off. The movie was sent to distributors anyway. After CODE RED received complaints about the audio, they issued a recall for the DVDs.
According to an unidentified CODE RED REP- “We gave refund to all stores and told them to destroy it. They took the refund and still sold it with the defect. I gave all stores refund, only for them to sell the defected DVD; Movie didn't make any money, and 2/3 of stores that had the DVD with the defect and sold it anyway."
CODE RED went on to correct the sync issue, and re-issued the film on DVD with corrected audio. They also repacked the DVD (in the example pic above). The corrected dub DVD is plentiful (I do not have a corrected copy, it is just shown for representation). The “out of sync dub” version is highly sought after by collectors.
This DVD for sale is an out of sync copy.
