Those who would appreciate the following wording likely don`t need it, as we already understand common-sense economic principles. Even so, I wanted to illuminate the issues expicitly. The idea occurred to me while working on the outside (a.k.a. door) mirror of my BMW E30, yet the principle applies much more widely.
There are two types of people in the universe:
- Those who will spend hours disassembling a malfunctioning part and studying, testing, fixing and/or replacing the technically intricate internal components - Those who won`t
I am in the former group. I love doing such things. I trust you have the same mindset, otherwise you would not be looking for such internal components. Perhaps while working on the internals of the malfunctioning part, you have...
- Lost, or - Damaged, or - Observed to be damaged...
... one tiny internal component, and you are looking to buy just that one little item, so that you can finish your project.
If all you wanted were to once again have a fully functioning vehicle, then it would likely be more prudent to simply buy the complete used replacement unit and bolt it on. But, if your mind works like mine, then what you want is not that simple. You are looking for this internal component not just to fix your car, but also because you enjoy the work, even as you also look forward to the satisfaction of putting it all together and seeing it work again.
If I were to make a mathematically correct price breakdown of the internal components, so that the prices for the internal components add up to the price for the assembled part, then perhaps that tiny internal component would be priced at 12 cents. However, it is not good business for me to identify, remove, inspect, clean, inventory, list, retrieve, pack and ship that one little item, for so little revenue.
To solve this problem, I choose a minimum price for these internal components, to make it worth my time. So, if you observe that the prices for these individual items do not add up to the price when assembled, then I agree with you -- and now you know why.
Also, if part A consists of internal components B and C, and B breaks often whereas C hardly ever does, then I would price B higher than C.
