This remarkable book is a compilation of Cather's  observations in 1902 during her first trip to Europe. At this time Cather was an obscure school teacher. Willa Cather's main interests, the interests which will later appear in her works, are almost all here outlined: her regard for simple people, her love of nature, her devotion to France and all Latin peoples, her deeply religious feelings, her abiding concern with the problems of death and immortality- all themes which later appeared in her short stories and novels.
