ANTIQUE GILT TEAK WOOD BURMESE BUDDHA
For your consideration is this rare and exquisite 18th century Arakan gilded wood Buddha Statue from Rakhine State in northwest Burma.
Carved from a single block of teak wood, then gilded, lacquered
and richly decorated, the serene and richly robed figure is portrayed seated
on a red-lacquered pedestal, the front and side panels embellished with five horizontal rows of mirror mosaic. The pedestal front bears
an inscription and the pedestal back has a consecration compartment.
The historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, is portrayed in
bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of Calling the Earth to Witness, commemorating
the moment the Buddha reached enlightenment. The right hand is in Earth-touching Mudra and the left hand is in Meditation Mudra.
The Buddha's serene face is sensitively rendered with downcast eyes, a smile on his lips and long earlobes that reach his shoulders,
a reminder of his princely past. His hair is arranged in neat snail shell curls, rising up to his ushnisha.
