This
is a brief history of Bulgarian electronic calculators ELKA. Bulgaria was the
4-th country in the world to develop desktop digital electronic calculators,
after UK’s ANITA, Italian IME and Japan’s CASIO and SHARP. The first model ELKA
(bulg.abbrev. ELectronic CAlculator) was issued in 1965. It was called ELKA
6521 and was based on germanium transistors. The scientists St. Angelov, L.
Antonov and P. Popov received the highest science & culture price in
communist Bulgaria – the „Dimitrov“ Prize & Honorary title. The company "Orgtechnika" made the
fourth (4th) electronic calculator in the world, after Anita (1961), IME 84
(1963) and Friden (1964). Orgtechnika was the first Eastern Block company to
offer an electronic calculator. It was named "ELKA" (from the words
ELectronic CAlculator) and the model was ELKA 6522. It was introduced in April
1965 in and in May 1965 in USSR at Moscow
expo of electronic industry. Orgtechnika most probably was the FIRST company IN
THE WORLD to offer an electronic calculator with a paper output (printer) -
ELKA 25 in 1966 (at Hanover expo, 1966).!
ELKA 53 is from the well-known ELKA 50- series of desktop calculators.
This series was designed in early 1970s in response to the demand of mid size
desktop calculators. The company
"Orgtechnika" had several models already in production, including a
recently introduced variety of pocket calculators (the 100- and 130- series)
but there was a demand for a high quality mid-sized desktop calculator. Target
market were universities, medium and large offices, state companies,
accountants, etc. This model was exported in large numbers to Eastern Europe and
USSR.
By
many Elka 50-series is considered to be the BEST series of calculators produced
by Orgtechnika. This series was produced for more than 14 years and had several
models like for example: Elka 50, Elka 51, Elka 53, Elka 55, Elka 1300. The
last one (Elka 1300) is an aniversary eddition - "1300 years ". It
was a slightly re-styled version of either Elka 50 or Elka 51 and it was
prodcued only in 1981.
I
think ELKA 1300 probably will be an interesting item for many Electronic
Calculator collectors.
