The SWITZERLAND LUZERN 1888 Eidgenössisches Turnfest silver Medal was made with gilt on silver. Gilt is a thin layer of gold applied to a metal surface, usually by electroplating or gilding. Gilt silver is also known as vermeil or silver-gilt. The gilt silver medal has a weight of 20.05 g and a diameter of 33 mm, while the bronze medal has a weight of 16 g and a diameter of 33.2 mm34. The gilt silver medal is rarer and more valuable than the bronze medal, as it was probably awarded to the winners or officials of the gymnastics festival.
