A Large and Richly Illustrated 1872 History of the US, Covering the Civil War
A CHILD'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES
VOLUME 2 only
by John Gilmary Shea
A first edition of a history covering the 1850's to the end of the Civil War, with dozens of full-page engravings.
Description: John Gilmary Shea A CHILD'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES; Vol 2 only, New York: McMenamy, Hess, & Co., 1872, 7 x 10 in., 218 pp. numbered 225 to 443. Numerous full page engravings throughout, showing generals, politicians, Indian chiefs, battles of the war, assasination of Lincoln, surrender of Lee, etc.
Condition: Hardbound in heavy red buckram with gilt title on spine. Minor fading of spine and light wear to extremities. Many of the tissue guards for the engravings are present in excellent condition. Some of the plates have traces of what looks like a very light damp stain around the edges, not affecting the engraving, but I don't see that on facing pages or on any of the edges of the book; and there is no musty smell or other signs of damp, so this may have occurred during the engraving of the plates. Otherwise, the book is very clean, very tightly bound, and unmarked throughout. Overall VG with many lovely illustrations.
Information: . We are pleased to offer this lovely little book, designed nominally for children, but actually representing a nicely illustrated contemporary history of the Civil War. This volume begins with the Mexican War and Presidents Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore, and ends just after the end of the Civil War, with the presidency of Andrew Johnson. There's even a full page engraving of Johnson's impeachment. A great addition to any collection of books on American History, military history, the presidency, Americana, etc. VISIT MY EBAY STORE FOR OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST(Click This Link) Shipping: Free media rate shipping in US.
