Quick note: My seeds are grown, harvested and selected by me. I start ALL of my seedlings/transplants, so you know there are no chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, or harsh commercial fertilizers used in the products I produce. I use organic fertilizer, compost, and red worm castings, that's it! I do not buy foreign seeds or seeds that are out of date. I have been growing these varieties for years and they are proven winners. You will not be dissapointed.

Back in 2010 I bought my first assortment of heirloom seeds, off ebay actually, from Blue Ribbon Tomatoes in Kentucky. Unfortunately, they are no longer selling heirloom tomato seed, boo! 

Anyway, I bought 100 or so varieties and have been growing them out ever since. One of those tomatoes that I continue to grow out is 
PURPLE DOG CREEK
. This tomato performs great!

, performed amazingly well for me in the high desert frontier at 4100 feet. My growing season is sometimes very long (May-November) and other years it can end in early September. No matter, this variety puts on a ton of fruit and does very well regardless of length of season. Great flavor and appearance.

  • If they gave out blue ribbons for taste alone, this tomato would be sure to win. It won in our own taste contest - sweet, yes, but a complex blend of sweet tastes all mixed up. Hard to describe! We might call it pink, but in times past this tomato color was called purple. They weigh in the one pound range, and produced right up until frost.
  • Purple Dog Creek tomatoes are deep pink fruits with exceptional flavor; sweet, but very nice with a real tomato taste!
  •  Yields are very high and fruits vary a bit in size, but many will be over a pound. 
  • Plants here offered yummy fruits into the Fall and showed good disease resistance.

  • It really doesn’t mater that the tomato is not purple because it’s excellent! Purple Dog Creek is a 1 pound slicer that works well for many applications. This well balanced fruit has flavor that will quickly get you hooked! It’s not too sweet, acidic, juicy of mild. It’s just perfect! Flesh has a really nice, smooth texture. Vines are hardy and seem to love hotter weather! Go for it!

  • "Members of the Winchester Avenue Church in Martinsburg, WV did charity work in depressed rural Appalachian communities. They did renovations of churches and barns and basically helped out in whatever way they could. At one of the communities in the Purple Dog Creek region of Kentucky near Munfordville, a picnic dinner was given as a "thank you". Mr. Bill Hoffman asked if he could take a couple of the tomatoes with him for his friend. Bill brought the tomatoes back to Martinsburg and gave them to my friend Spud Raney. Spud ate one to taste it and saved seeds from the other. Spud then called me and said I've got a good one, you might want to come get seeds. I traded with people and listed it in the SSE and Spud sells through the WV Market Bulletin. Between us we got the tomato into circulation."
  • A good sized, round red/dark pink tomato. Very juicy and TASTY! This was great again in salsa, salads, and on sandwiches.

Nutritional Value:
The red tomato is listed on most nutritional lists as a super-food. It is packed with the antioxidant vitamins A and C, potassium and the B vitamins for heart health, and above all a powerful carotenoid called lycopene. This phytonutrient, which is responsible for the bright red color of tomatoes, has been studied for its role in fighting various cancers, and its ability to lower cholesterol. When tomatoes are cooked, even more lycopene is made available. Lycopene has been shown to be especially effective when eaten with fat-rich foods such as avocado, olive oil, or nuts. There are the ingredients for a powerhouse salad!

All seeds are fermented, strained, washed, dried, and stored at 34 degrees f until you purchase them. I have been saving seed for 7 years and this is the step by step process I use every year and I'll tell you, my germination rates are amazing! 
 
a quick note on seed storage... I feel through my experience the best way to store your seed is in the refrigerator. Some vegetable varieties produce seed that remains viable for many years (tomatoes) and others produce seed that does not store well under any conditions (onions). I believe seed stored under refrigerated conditions could last 10 years or more. I have just planted some ACE 55 seeds from 2000 this last summer 2017. They did great! Germination rates were in the 90% range and these seeds had been sitting in a box in my garage for the past 17 years! I have some of that seed available now listed as Marlboro Ace 55. GET SOME!

WHAT IS AN HEIRLOOM? Heirloom plants are grown from seeds that have been handed down thru generations, saved from year to year, some varieties dating back hundreds of years. Many made the migration from Europe and the East with the immigrants coming to the USA. The seeds are never cross pollinated  and so they remain true to their particular characteristics. Heirloom tomatoes come in all colors, shapes, and sizes ? Reds, Pinks, Yellows, Orange, White, Green, Striped, and Black. Ranging in sizes of cherry and grape to large grapefruit size, meaty, or juicy.  

WHY HEIRLOOM? These tomatoes are more natural, they are non GMO (genetically modified). They do not have as long of a shelf life as store bought tomatoes, but that is what makes them special. They have a real fantastic tomato flavor not found in grocery store offerings. These tomatoes are indeterminate (they grow all season, they flower all season and they produce tomatoes all season. They don?t stop until frost. Once heirloom tomatoes are picked, they do not have a long shelf life as hybrids but they more than make up for any shortcomings in flavor.
