Randolph Caldecott was an English artist and book illustrator born in Chester on 22nd March 1846. He is widely considered to be among the most prolific and most influential children’s book creators of his generation, and along with Walter Crane and Kate Greenaway, one of the strongest contributors to the child’s nursery motif that the genre of English children’s illustrated literature would exhibit in its developmental period in the latter 19th century. Caldecott also illustrated novels, accounts of foreign travel and made humorous drawings depicting hunting and fashionable life. Some of the books contained within this collection are extremely hard-to-find and will provide a valuable library of reference material and wonderful illustrations.
