This is a very popular vegetable growing on a vine which goes about 5m tall. It is vigorous, early maturing variety producing 550-600g waxy skinned oblong green fruit to 28-30cm long.  The fruit flesh is crunchy and has similar texture like cucumber. The fruits are set mostly on lateral vines. It’s cultivated around the world for its edible fruit, which is considered a staple in many types of Asian and Indian cuisine.

 

Bitter melon is a good source of nutrients like fiber, vitamin C, folate and vitamin A and has been shown to improve several markers of long-term blood sugar control, including levels of fructosamine and hemoglobin A1c. Bitter melon is low in calories but high in fiber. Scientific studies have found that bitter melon extract may also help decrease belly fat and body weight.

 

People use bitter melon for diabetes, stomach and intestinal problems, to promote menstruation, and many other conditions .Bitter melon contains a chemical that acts like insulin to help reduce blood sugar levels. Bitter melon can be used in stir fries, soups, as a tea, or in curries.

 

Best time to sow seeds after frost, seeds need min 20°C to germinate. For better germination rate, soak the seeds in water for a few hours before planting and sow them in 20mm deep in a sunny, well-drained position. They germinate between 10-14 days. Sow them 90 apart. Enjoy your harvest approx. 65-70 days from transplanting.
