The chain was founded by Johannes Neye , who in 1881 opened a so-called galanteri shop at Vimmelskaftet 26 at Strøget in Copenhagen . The store, just called Johannes Neye, negotiated gift items, including handcraft and leather goods. Already the following year, another store was opened in Nygade 3. The expansion of the railroad combined with the woman's release meant that the leather goods industry in Denmark, towards the beginning of the 20th century, saw great progress. The women's bag had become a fixed part of the wardrobe. In 1891 , Neye started his own production of leather goods, which business act required if more stores were to be found in the same municipality. The property Vimmelskaftet 26 and the corner property Vimmelskaftet / Klosterstræde formed the framework of production, and today the fund still owns a part of the properties, which today only house the company's administration. The properties were built in their present form in 1930 .
When Johannes Neye died in 1926, the company was taken over by his eldest son, Knud Neye , who drove it to his death in 1945 . Knud Neyes widow, Agathe Neye , then took over. She decided to let the stores and her personal wealth into a fund, the Neye Foundation, to ensure the continued operation of the company when the couple was childless. The fund also supports research in diseases, primarily cancer . Agathe Neye died in 1980 . In 1981, the name of the stores was changed from Johannes Neye to just Neye. Since 1996 , the flagship store on Strøget has been located at Vimmelskaftet 28.
