An original antique map of WESTMORLAND (Westmorlandiae comitatus) by Christopher Saxton and William Kip. Published in Camden's Britannia in 1637, though the plate was engraved in 1607. The map, which is framed (gilt 530x440mm) and mounted; has a printed area of 320x265mm); and is attractively hand coloured. This, the 3rd state of the map and is the first large printed map to cover Westmorland per se (Saxton's earlier map combined Westmorland and Cumberland). Among the map's features are the hills and lakes of central and eastern Lakeland (Helvellyn, Windermere, Ullswater etc. are named); the Kent and Leven estuaries; and the settlements of Kendal, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Kirkby Lonsdale. There is a decorative scale (bottom right) and a title cartouche with strapwork (top right). The map is in very good condition. NB the map will be shipped out-of-frame to international buyers.
