An original antique town plan of Manchester, published by Charles Duffield in The Stranger's Guide of Manchester of 1850. The plan, originally folded in the Guide, and measuring 610x450mm, is uncommon. It is unframed, unmounted and canvas-backed. The plan, which is highly detailed, is based on the 1st edition of the 6 inch OS map for Manchester, published in 1845. It is, however, at a smaller scale: approximately 1:5500. The plan shows the street pattern of the rapidly expanding urban area of the city at the height of the industrial revolution, and surrounding rural settlements (e.g. Pendleton, Collyhurst, Harpurhey) soon to be incorporated into the urban fabric. There is a gazetteer of street names. Features of interest include the Manchester-Liverpool railway and its rail terminal, Victoria and London Road stations, and the River Irwell. Apart from some slight browning and staining around the margins, the map is in good condition. Check out my other items!
