This is a superb Antique Cornelius and Company of Philadelphia Table Lamp from the 1840's. It measures 25 inches high from the bottom to the top of the finial. It was converted from an oil lamp to electric many years ago. It is adorned with an extremely expensive custom silk shade. There is a small tear on the inside of the shade that is not at all noticeable from the outside or when the lamp is lit. It is minor. Cornelius and Co. of Philadelphia was a very prestigious company. These oil lamps are found in some of the most prominent collections including museums in the U.S. The Chicago Art Institute, the Smithsonian, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to name just a few. This lamp is particularly beautiful for several reasons. The overall form, the gilding and hand painting over the metal and of course the Cornelius and Co. Oval Plaque on the base. If you examine the plaque you will see that it says Cornelius and Co. - Philadelphia - April 15 - 1841. This wonderful converted oil lamp is a great example of Early American lighting. They are extremely difficult to find. It is being offered from our collection of Early American Art and Folk Art for the first time. A great find.
