Krakatoa, The Day The World Exploded: August 27, 1883 by Simon Winchester, published by Perennial, 2004, good trade paperback with minor cover edge wear & minor creasing.

When the volcano on Krakatoa erupted in a massive explosion, it caused thousands of deaths, the loudest sound ever measured and a backlash against Dutch colonial rule that led to a revival of fundamentalist Islam in the Dutch East Indies.  I love everything I've ever read by Simon Winchester because of his great writing style and ability to explain the science behind events in an enjoyable way without dumbing it down.
