This is a very rare find indeed, an ancient Lanna period terracotta Buddhist votive vase decorated with images of three guardian elephants and eighteen Buddha votives. This piece dates back to the Lanna Period (13th-18th centuries) when the Lanna Kingdom was established in the territory covering the upper Ping and Kok River basins; areas of the provinces of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phrae, Nan, Phayao, Lamphun and Lampang, and some parts of China and Laos. This area was once known as the Kingdom of Lanna (Land of A Million Rice Fields) the capital of which was located in the city of Chiang Mai. Buddhist vases like this were commonly kept by Buddhist monks and believers in the dwellings use in devotionals. Sometimes, ornate vases like this were used as urns, in which the ashes of relatives or renown monks were kept. To find a relic of this age in such fine condition is very rare.
