It is hard to believe that such realism could be carved into a piece this small. This miniature is extremely accurate in scale and realistic in its form, patina, and touch. The detail is impeccable... even down to the veins that appear in the elephant's ears. Mr. Somsak Meewan is considered one of the best (if not the best) living elephant wood carver in Thailand today. He is a fourth generation woodcarver specializing in elephant carvings and hails from a long line of elephant mahouts (trainers). Thai culture revers elephants above all other creatures. In the past, elephants were used for such task as clearing forest and transportation. Until recently many Thai people still kept elephants, but nowadays most elephants in the region are kept in conservation centers. Please check out the photos (above) that I recently took of Mr. Meewan and of elephants and mahouts on the road near Chiang Mai Thailand.
