THE DARKNESS - PERMISSION TO LAND - CD, Atlantic Records/Warner Music UK Ltd., 5050466-7452-2-4 (2003)

With the spectre of the Grunge movement still lurking ominously in the shadows and the restrictive bonds of Nu Metal squeezing what little joy was left from Rock n' Metal music...four unlikely hombres bestrode garishly through the dry ice of England's Lowestoft and with hand aloft, cried "HALT!" The polarising arrival of 'Permission To Land', The Darkness' debut studio album, became the reawakening that fans of good-time Rock were looking for, whilst at the same time the sniffy classes dismissed them as a parody, a bad joke, and a stain on the historic foundations of Heavy music. Justin Hawkins n' crew cared just as much of course about the heavy history of rock, but they also cared that the music made during those hey-days was done with a strong sense of celebration and also some self-deprecation. 'Permission To Land' certainly put the F.U.N. back into rock music, and if many thought the band 'uncool', many more didn't and took the album to #1 in the UK where it went on to sell 1.5 million copes. Shame the party didn't last, but for the time being, the converted to The Darkness' party hard manifesto sang aloud - "Gimme a 'D'...gimme an 'ARKNESS'"!
