Whitney Hubbard was an American Impressionist painter and teacher known for his marine and coastal landscapes. Notoriously reclusive, Hubbard settled in Greenport, Long Island as a young man. Though his work was little known beyond Long Island, Hubbard had exhibited his work at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Brooklyn Art Museum. Hubbard was born in Middletown, Connecticut in 1875. His ancestors were some of the earliest settlers of the Connecticut River Valley. While Hubbard was still young, his family moved to Greenport, Long Island. Years later, Hubbard returned to Middletown to attend Wesleyan University. After his studies, Hubbard taught at Long Island public schools and attended classes at the Art Students League in New York. Through the Art Students League, Hubbard met artist Frank Vincent DuMond, who taught him plein air painting. Plein air painting, or painting outdoors, was adopted by the Impressionists in the early 20th century in order to capture natural light and shadow. By 1912, Hubbard became a full time artist and started exhibiting his work. He settled back in Greenport in 1913, painting and teaching the artists who became the Peconic Bay Impressionists, the painters of the East End, Long Island. Though Hubbard saw success during the early 20th century, his career suffered during the Great Depression and he never returned to public life.
