This older Zuni bolo was made in 1974 to 1984, near the end of Lee Edaakie's lifetime. He was born in 1914 and died in 1984. It is a Thunderbird, sometimes unfortunately referred to as Hopi Bird, figure that is exceptionally beautiful with exceptionally high quality workmanship. The colors are bold and unique, an exceptionally rare combination. It is a strong contrast between yellow lip shell and the jet and natural clean blue turquoise in two of the tail feathers and the crest. There is a lovely choice of a spondylus shell or coral in the beak. These bright colors create a strong statement so the look of this bird is spectacular. The yellow lip in the eye, body and wings is very iridescent so these aspects are always changing and the camera doesn't indicate the depth of beauty in the way these colors reflect and change. The contrast with the flat jet and the neon blue turquoise is great. The stones were selected for their bright contrasting colors and their chatoyancy, and the pictures look very dull compared to the lively dancing colors in this bolo.
The silver partitions between the different mosaic inlays are perfect and all even and wide enough to make a gorgeous pattern of their own. All the inlay is perfectly executed, fitting just right without areas of cement showing. All the silverwork is expert, too, and minimal, with some raindrops punctuating the tail, crest, neck, but all minimalistic, too. Everything about the inlay, silver work, choice of stones, and cutting and buffing of the stones is clean and sure and perfect. The piece is in excellent vintage condition. The bolo closes with a Bennett clasp which is in fine condition and the tie is also in fine condition The tips are original. The mosaic inlay is entirely flush and the stones hand buffed flat, and cut to fit just perfectly. The work on the bolo is immaculate. There's a natural inclusion in the turquoise. There is no damage. If you've bought from me before you know I don't exaggerate. These colors are a vibrant combination.
The bolo measures 2" H and 1-1/16" W and the tips, which are nice old tips with some engraving and good patina, are 2-1/8" long. Total length of the tie with the tips is 40". The clasp is dated from 1974 and later, on page 55 of the book "Native American Bolo Ties." It is a superb work of mosaic inlay and very beautiful. It's entirely suitable for a man or a woman and will be a stunning addition to any collection.
It is my opinion based on my extensive experience with this artist's work that this bolo is the work of Lee Edaakie. He was one of the most significant artists in the CG Wallace era. I think it's truly spectacular; it is simple and it is elegant.
