Here are most common problems for Audi TT (1998-2006) and A3 (1998-2002) that have Jaeger instrument clusters:   

1. Tacho, speedo, gauges and all screens intermittently not working, or totally dead. This requires reprogramming of the microprocessor, sometimes replacement of the chip itself. 
2. The big LCD display at center failing, Instrument cluster display fades out and information unreadable. This requires replacement of a new LCD. 

Replacement by used cluster from junk yard is expensive and complicated due to differences of immobilizer systems, cost of second-hand cluster and effort to adapt to your car. Further more, ALL cluster of this design WILL fail , just in a matter of time. .
