In 1816 Mary Shelley travelled to Geneva with her poet friends, including Lord Byron and future Husband Percy Shelley. During their stay they decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. Out of this challenge Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus in 1918, a story about a scientist’s scary act at playing God and creating life. It became one of the best loved gothic novels.

The novel has gone on to be adapted into many screen productions, and to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein, The Royal Mint has issued a commemorative £2 coin for 2018.

The reverse of this gothic coin was designed by Thomas Doherty and features the words ‘Frankenstein’ in an electric gothic font, with ‘Bicentenary of Mary Shelley’s The Modern Prometheus’ around the edge.

The edge inscription says 'A SPARK OF BEING', which are the words of Frankenstein in the novel when he creates the creature.

The obverse features the fifth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by The Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark.

Your commemorative £2 has been struck to a superior Brilliant Uncirculated quality, and will be  encapsulated to preserve your coin for years to come.
