An original copperplate, engraved map of the WESTMORLAND (Westmoria comitatus) by Johan Blaeu. First published in Blaeu's Atlas Novus in 1645, this map is the Latin edition published on several occasions between 1645 and 1662. The map is unframed (printed area 490x380mm), with hand colour contemporary with the date of publication. The map has wide margins. This is a highly  decorative map featuring 5 coat-of-arms, the royal arms and two blank shields. There is an ornate title cartouche surrounded by 4 putti; and a mileage scale with an equestrian figure and two other figures. The map includes a wealth of geographical detail including rivers (Eden, Lune, Kent, Winster etc), relief (Helvellyn is named), lakes (Windermere, Coniston Water, Ullswater etc), towns, villages, woodlands and estates. The map is an excellent example of Blaeu's map.
