An original, copper engraved, antique map of HEREFORDSHIRE by John Speed. First published in Speed's Theatre of Empire in 1611, this map is the George Humble edition of 1627. The map is unframed (printed area 510x380mm) with later hand colour. The verso text, describing the history and geography of Herefordshire is in English. The map features the royal arms, six coats-of-arms of nobility, a scrolled title cartouche, images of map surveyors, a scale and a description of the Battle of Mortimer's Cross (war of the Roses) in 1461. The map shows the county in the late 16th century (based on Saxton's survey) with rivers, hills, towns, villages, forests and estates. This is a fine example of Speed's map, in good condition and with generous margins.
