An original, engraved antique map of HUNTINGDONSHIRE (Huntington both shire and shire towne...) by John Speed. The map was first published in 1611 in Speed's Theatre of Empire. This example is the Bassett & Chiswell edition of 1676. The map is framed (600x710mm) and mounted; has a printed area approximately 380x500mm; has later hand colour; and is blank verso. It features two inset street plans of Huntingdon and Ely; the royal arms; nine other coats-of-arms; a mileage scale; and a decorative title cartouche flanked by two huntsmen. The map shows rivers, relief, fens, towns, villages, estates, woodland and the boundaries of hundreds. Prominent geographical features include the towns of Peterborough and Huntingdon; Whittlesey Mere; extensive tracts of fen; and the Great North Road (this was the only Speed county map published in the 17th century to include a road). The map is evenly age toned; is not stuck down; and without tears or holes is in good condition. For international buyers the map will be sold out-of-frame and mount.
