This 4 mm Bevelled, angled soldering tip is a spare part for our SolderPro 180 (K) Soldering Iron. This tip is for soldering. This genuine, IRODA tip is an optional extra and is not normally supplied with our soldering iron kit.
Bevelled (Angled) Tip:- While not as commonly used as are chisel and conical tips, our bevelled (angled) tip is actually more versatile for:
  • Small Jobs: Its pointed tip can also be used for small solder jobs.
  • Large Jobs: The large flat surface of our Bevelled / Angled and Chisel tips hold more solder than other tips. This pre-loading of the tip with plenty of solder is handy for joining wires together or dragging solder across multiple pins.
Bevelled tips (with angled face) are better (supply more heat) than conical tips for soldering larger components because:-
  1. The larger, one-sided face (larger face than a conical tip) has more thermal-contact area to transfer heat more quickly. (Think of it as a gate which if inadequate will prevent efficient heat transfer.)
  2. The tip-point is slightly bigger (greater “thermal mass” = more heat reservoir/supply) to transfer heat for a longer duration without cooling-off.
Remember: Smaller tips restrict heat transfer and increase soldering time which may result in:
  1. Unreliable solder connections and
  2. Damaged components.
Which is the Best Tip-Size (for SolderPro 180)?
Small: A small solder joint requires less heat-energy. So, a soldering iron tip's small thermal mass (small tip) stores just enough heat-energy to melt the amount of solder required for a small joint. Our 1.8 mm conical tip is small.
Too Small: Where the thermal mass of a large soldering joint (job) is greater than the small tip (of soldering iron), the heat-transfer (from tip to job) will require more heat than is available (from the small tip). This causes the solder on the joint to partially re-solidify before completion. If then, you hold the small tip on the joint for too long, it causes excessive heat soak and risk of heat-damage to the surrounding components and insulation. To prevent this, use a soldering iron with a larger tip (more thermal mass). Our 1.8 mm conical tip is too small for large jobs.
Large: When soldering a large joint (job), it requires greater heat transfer (from a larger soldering iron tip). Although a larger tip takes longer to heat up, this gives it a greater energy reservoir (more heat in reserve). Then, when soldering large wires, the larger tip will melt the solder more easily and quickly. This reduces the time for the tip to transfer heat to the job. Thus, when more heat is available (from larger tip), it actually reduces the risk of heat-damage (reduces heat soak) to the surrounding components. Adjusting the heat of a small tip to be higher has a similar benefit because more heat-energy is packed into the tip.

What is Thermal Mass?

Thermal Mass is determined by:
     •  Size and density of an object, (e.g. both solder joint & tip of soldering iron).
Thermal Mass affects:
     •  Absorption rate and storage of heat-energy of an object (Heat-sink)
Thermal Mass Ratio: When soldering, a good balance of thermal mass is required between:
     1.  Solder Job or Joint (heat-sink), and
     2.  Soldering Tip (heat source)
  A correct balance of thermal mass keeps the solder molten during the heating of the joint (job). This balance starts with the purchase of the correct soldering tip size and its shape (and soldering iron).

Is the brand “PROTRONICS” or what? Many eBay sellers do not state brand names of items listed. A Brand name can often be -rightly or wrongly- perceived as being an important feature of a product. However, a brand name can sometimes have little bearing on the quality of the product. For example, some years ago I stocked Fluke 19 DMMs. 100% of them were faulty. This percentage of warranty claims was more than I have ever experienced for any other brand. Even ones that Fluke repaired under warranty all failed a second time. Commonly manufacturers print different brand names on different batches of identical products. With bulk quantities, often different brand names are chosen each buyer. The word “PROTRONICS” in my listings is for the following two reasons, 1) Our registered trading name, “PROTRONICS” has received a widespread & positive reputation. 2) “PROTRONICS” on the pictures & images prevents re-using. The omission of brand names in item listings does not detract from the high quality of such items. Every feature or detail of specification in this listing, has been very carefully and honestly described. However, we invite suggested corrections regarding unintentional inaccuracies or mistakes found in our item descriptions. Therefore, regardless of the brand, we guarantee that the quality and specifications of this product is exactly as is described in this listing.

  4. The original manufacturer's packaging must be included with returned items. If item or its packaging show signs of damage, it will be rejected and returned to the purchaser at purchaser's cost.

  6. Opened Packaging: Once the item's manufacturer packaging has been opened, our Money Back Policy no longer applies. WARRANTY:

Warranty only applies to faults caused by manufacturing defects. A fault caused by user abuse such as dust or water entry, is not a manufacturing defect. If you believe a product has a manufacturing defect, return it with the freight/delivery cost paid by you. The buyer is responsible for all return shipping costs. If it has a manufacturing defect, we will replace or repair it and return to you (freight free within Australia; you pay freight outside Australia). If it is not faulty (at the discretion of the supplier/manufacturer), or has been damaged by anyone, we may request additional payment for the cost to return it to you in same condition.

SHIPPING/DELIVERY:

  • Regular Postage: Cost is Calculated (Qty. 2 or more: free postage) within Australia. Parcel is left at your address if unattended.
  • Signature on Delivery (optional): Parcel is then NOT left at your address when unattended.
  • Tracking: Tracking is NOT included unless you choose "Prepaid...Satchel", "Express," “Registered,” or "+ Signature."
  • Shipping time: usually takes 5-14 days within Australia.
    • Australia Post has increased postage delivery times. Ordinary postage now takes up to 6 business days. Thus, when posted on Friday, “6 business days” (including 2 weekends) means 10 days. However, NT, WA & TAS destinations take even longer, (up to 14 days). (Also see International).
