FIRST EDITION, first printing, first state. Overall in GOOD condition. Only 3, 500 copies were printed, rare. Full stamped decorated grey cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, modest wear to the top & bottom of the spine with a little bit of fraying to the cloth, gilt lettering is muted. Lacking front free endpage. Small stain on the foredge. A collection of essays on England where Hawthorne served as Consul. Two leafs have top corners missing. Has the single leaf ad at p. 399, and reads "myterious" at page 145. Copies of the second printing have a bulky Ticknor & Fields catalogue inserted instead of the single leaf ad. The third printing restores the ad at p. 399, but the correct spelling "mysterious" appears on page 145. Overall in GOOD condition. Photos available upon request.
