WWI TASMANIAN RPPC – SOLDIER PORTRAIT – NORTH-WEST TASMANIA – GATEHOUSE FAMILY CONNECTION – c1914–1918
A scarce First World War era Tasmanian real photo postcard depicting a portrait of an Australian soldier in uniform, photographed during the wartime years.
The soldier is shown in formal studio-style pose wearing the standard Australian Imperial Force service tunic, complete with rising sun collar badges and shoulder straps. The portrait captures the distinctive appearance of the early AIF uniform and provides a strong, well-composed likeness typical of the period when soldiers had photographs taken prior to departure for overseas service.
The postcard is believed to have a connection with the Gatehouse family of the Wynyard / Oldina district in North-West Tasmania, adding an appealing genealogical and regional historical interest.
Many young men from the North-West Coast of Tasmania enlisted during the First World War, and portraits such as this were often sent home to family members before embarkation.
