About the book >.>.> The Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell Book by Bertrand Russell
The Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell is a selection of writings chosen by Professor Egner and Mr Denonn from Russell’s extensive body of work. In his introductory remarks, Russell reflects on encountering pieces written as much as fifty-seven years earlier, which can seem to him like the work of another person. He describes how his philosophical views changed repeatedly over the course of his writing life and argues that such change need not be treated as a failing.
Russell compares philosophical progress to approaching a mountain through mist: its outline becomes clearer, yet never entirely distinct. He contrasts philosophy’s tendency to be associated with theology with the scientific spirit, which recognises that present beliefs may not be wholly true. He also cautions against presenting his life and work as though he were indifferent to the transformations he experienced, and says that important subjects need not always be addressed in a solemn or portentous tone.
