About the book >.>.> Ruskin Today Chosen and Annotated by Kenneth Clark Book by Kenneth Clark

Ruskin Today is a selection of John Ruskin’s writings, chosen and annotated by Kenneth Clark, who had read Ruskin for forty years. Clark introduces each of the six sections, which cover Ruskin’s life and the wide range of his work. The selection presents Ruskin as a writer of poetic imagination, a critic and a social reformer, while recognising qualities that can make his writing difficult for modern readers, including its tendency to moralise and the incoherence of some later works.

The book is presented as an alternative to reading Ruskin’s collected works, which comprise thirty-nine volumes, and to earlier anthologies that included much rhetoric and descriptive writing while omitting passages considered relevant to modern readers. The selection reflects Ruskin’s wish to be treated not as a classic but as a living force, expressed in the repeated word “Today” on the binding of his books. (SP)
