SIMPLE CARE INSTRUCTIONS

LIGHT

🌿 For optimal growth, place your Calathea in bright, indirect sunlight, such as near an east-facing window or filtered behind a sheer curtain. While the foliage thrives in abundance of bright light, avoid harsh direct sunlight at all costs. The delicate, velvet leaves are highly sensitive and will scorch or bleach instantly under intense sun.

🌿 Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week; this ensures all sides receive equal light and prevents the plant from leaning heavily toward the window.

WATER & HUMIDITY

🌿 Water your Calathea thoroughly only when the top 1–2 inches of the potting mix feel dry to the touch. These tropical plants prefer their soil to be consistently and evenly moist, but never waterlogged. They are highly prone to root rot if they sit in stagnant tray water, so always ensure proper drainage.

🌿 This plant requires high humidity (60% to 70%+), so keep it near a humidifier or group it with other plants. Avoid heavy night misting, as trapped moisture on the velvet surface can trigger fungal leaf rot. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months when growth naturally slows down.

TEMPERATURE & SOIL

🌿 Calathea's ideal temperature range is between 18°C–26°C. They are strictly tropical and highly sensitive to cold; keep them away from drafty doors, windows, and air conditioning units. Try not to expose your plant to conditions lower than 15°C, or it may drop its leaves and enter forced dormancy.

🌿 Plant it exclusively in a loose, chunky, and heavily well-draining aroid mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, pumice, and peat-free potting compost mimics its native forest floor perfectly.

FEEDING

🌿 Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser every 4 weeks only during its active growing season (spring through autumn). This provides the necessary nutrients to support its fast-growing, heavy foliage. Do not feed at all during the winter dormancy period when the plant rests.

ONGOING CARE

🌿 This plant is fascinating to care for; if an old lower leaf turns yellow and droops, don't panic—this is a natural process as the plant reallocates energy to push out magnificent new growth. Simply snip the dead leaf away near the base with sterile shears.

🌿 Watch out for common indoor pests, particularly spider mites, which are notoriously attracted to the v-shaped sinus and undersides of the leaves. Wipe the foliage down regularly with a damp microfibre cloth to remove dust and deter infestations.

🌿 The stems and petioles should always feel upright and firm. If the plant begins to droop entirely or develops soft, mushy stems, it is a critical sign of distress—usually indicating overwatering or root rot.

The secret to a thriving Calathea is high humidity, bright filtered light, and careful watering. With the right care, your plant will reward you with a magnificent display of deeply contrasting silver and pink foliage.

(Note: Keep this plant safely out of reach of pets and children, as the leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals which are highly toxic if chewed or swallowed!)
