DESCRIPTION
A large Japanese Arita porcelain charger dating to the Meiji period, decorated throughout in underglaze cobalt blue on a white ground. The principal scene depicts several birds among flowering prunus branches and large peony blooms with dense foliage. The freely painted composition combines darker outlines with softer washes of blue, creating attractive tonal variation. The reverse is decorated with additional stylized foliage and blue concentric lines around the foot, giving the charger a strong decorative character from all angles.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Large blue and white Arita chargers were popular decorative wares during the Meiji period, when Japanese porcelain reached an increasingly international market. Bird and flower subjects draw upon a long East Asian artistic tradition and were particularly well suited to the broad surfaces of display chargers.
