Description
A substantial silver plated teapot of broad, squat and strongly lobed form, probably dating from the late 19th to early 20th century and designed in a Rococo Revival style.
The shape and decoration are particularly distinctive. The bulbous body is divided into broad convex lobes, producing a scalloped outline around the vessel. It stands on four scrolling feet, each rising into an elaborate raised foliate mount where it meets the body.
The exterior is extensively engraved with scrolling foliage, stylised floral forms and symmetrical ornamental panels. Fine hatched and cross-hatched detailing has been used within parts of the engraved design to give greater definition to the leaves and scrollwork.
A prominent cartouche to the side contains a large intertwined cursive monogram or group of initials. The lettering is highly stylised and overlapping, so the individual letters are difficult to distinguish with certainty, but it forms an important part of the original engraved decoration.
The hinged lid follows the elaborate treatment of the body. It has a shallow domed form divided into radiating panels, each engraved with further foliate scrollwork. At the centre is an urn-shaped finial above a broad raised leaf-form mount.
The long upward-curving spout is decorated at its base and along the lower section with raised scrolling and foliate ornament, with a further decorative terminal at the tip. Opposite is a high sweeping loop handle with narrow collar-like bands at its attachment points and a curled upper terminal.
The combination of the strongly lobed body, scrolling feet, elaborate spout, high loop handle, extensive engraving and domed hinged cover is consistent with the ornate historicist silver-plated tableware produced during the later 19th and early 20th centuries.
