Condition

The burgundy exterior covering has areas of loss, splitting and lifting along the long edges and around the ends, with scuffing to the corners and edges. The interior cream lining has yellow-brown discolouration and staining. The velvet-like lower lining also has areas of discolouration. The exterior gold-coloured decoration and lettering remain visible, and the interior inscriptions remain readable.

Description

A long, narrow fitted jewellery presentation case bearing the name Garrard & Co Ltd, 112 Regent Street W.1. The rectangular case has a hinged lid and a small centrally positioned yellow-coloured metal catch to the front edge.

The exterior is covered in dark burgundy-red textured material. The lid is decorated with a double gold-coloured linear border terminating in small stylised corner motifs. The word “INTERNATIONAL” appears in gold-coloured capitals towards one end.

Inside, the lid is padded and covered with cream satin-like fabric. The lower half is lined with golden-yellow velvet-like material formed into a long shallow recess, consistent with accommodating a bracelet or another slender item of jewellery. The exact original contents cannot be established from the empty case alone.

The lid lining bears a crown-like emblem above the wording:

“By appointment to

The word “INTERNATIONAL” is also applied separately to the centre portion of the lid lining.

The form, typography, Regent Street address and reference to “H.M. THE QUEEN” are consistent with a post-1952, mid-20th-century presentation case. The wording establishes Garrard & Co Ltd as the named jeweller associated with the case; it does not by itself establish who physically manufactured the case.
