Description

A cased set of six silver-plated coffee bean spoons, each stamped “EPNS” on the underside of the bowl.

Each spoon has a small rounded oval bowl leading into a long, slender straight stem. Towards the terminal is a rounded red element of translucent to semi-translucent appearance, followed by a short projecting white-metal end. This distinctive terminal form is characteristic of the style commonly described as a coffee bean spoon.

The spoons are housed in a rectangular fitted presentation case with rounded corners. The exterior is covered in black or very dark grey grained material and has two rear hinges and a centrally positioned yellow-coloured metal fastening.

The lower interior is lined in dark velvet-like material and shaped with six individual recesses corresponding to the spoons. The inside of the lid is lined with gathered cream-coloured textile.

The form of the spoons, coloured terminals and fitted presentation case are consistent with early 20th-century coffee bean spoon sets, probably dating from approximately the 1920s–1930s.
