Welcome to our auction! Many of you know us as
longtime collectors and sellers of antique and vintage Halloween, Christmas,
Valentine’s Day and Easter holiday memorabilia, paper ephemera, antique dolls
and toys and fine jewelry.
Over the next couple of months, I will be listing more incredible pieces of
Hallowe'en history from some of our hobby’s most well-respected and
knowledgeable collectors. I am celebrating more than 25 years of finding new
homes for such wonderful treasures on eBay!
US Metal Toy Manufacturing Co. made so many wonderful, lithographed tin noisemakers
for Hallowe'en, including these three outstanding examples.
They hail from the 1950s, and they all feature awesome and desirable designs.
First is a ratchet that features a witch with her broom and her always faithful
black cat companion. A crescent moon with a waving owl and stars completes the
scene. It is obviously midnight on All Hallows Eve. This ratchet has a wooden handle,
and it works well. I found a couple of tiny dents and a small amount of paint
loss. It has colors that are bright and eye catching. It measures 5 ¼” long and
has the round US Metal Toy logo on the front.
Next is a clanger featuring the face of a snarling black cat. This one measures
8” long, and it too has the US Metal mark. It also works well and retains both
of its tin clappers. There is some slight paint wear. Please see photos.
The third is my absolute favorite midcentury tin litho noisemaker. If you
collect for design elements, this one is for you, because it simply has it all! Also made by US Metal Toy, only part of the logo can be seen. The illustrations
are to DIE for, and include a witch tending her fiery cauldron, a skeleton, who
is observing her work, and even a flying ghost who has come to see the action.
Around the main scene is a haunted house, Jack o' Lanterns, owls, bats, cats, and
even a full moon. This noisemaker is in outstanding condition, and it does have
both of its tin clappers. Very little movement is needed for this piece to make
a loud racket. It measures 8” long. Interestingly, and surprisingly, ghosts and
skeletons are some of the hardest images find on noisemakers.
Festive gatherings on All Hallows Eve during the midcentury years often
included noisemakers just like these as game prizes, party favors, and
decorations for the table. They could then be carried out into the dark Hallowe'en
night making lots of noise that helped keep the spooks away.
The awesome 1950s illustrations, bright colors, and wonderful condition of this
trio would make them a real standout in your display. They would be an ideal addition
to any collection of authentic vintage and antique Halloween memorabilia, US
Metal noisemakers and other litho tin toys, and desirable holiday party items
from the midcentury era.
Enjoy!

Oh, there’ll be spooky doings
When cometh Hallowe’en,
With black cats loudly meowing,
And witches to be seen;
For ‘tis the night when bats careen,
And hoots the hooting owl,
While in the heavy shadows
The gray ghost slyly prowl.
Happy Hallowe’en 2026!
