VINTAGE JAPANESE BLACK LACQUER URUSHI VASE 11" MAKI-E BUTTERFLIES SIGNED NOMURA
Ideal for a gift or to increase your collection. No picks, no breaks, no fisures. It is used but in very good condition, given its age, surely better than other pieces from the same time. Received by Inheritance. No original packaging.
It measures 11" (28 cm) in height, by a maximum diameter of 3.5" (9 cm). Top measures 0.8" (2 cm) and base has a diameter of 2" (5 cm). It weights 17.3 oz (490 g).
Item Summary:
This is an authentic vintage Japanese black lacquer flower vase (Urushi lacquerware) standing 28 cm tall. The piece features an elegant, minimalist elongated neck that widens into a sleek bulbous body decorated with gold and metallic-toned butterflies crafted using the traditional Maki-e technique. The base is beautifully signed in gold lacquer with the family name/workshop signature "Nomura" (野村), accompanied by a traditional red artist's seal (Hanko) and a gold family crest (Kamon) depicting a stylized plum blossom (Ume-mon). Based on the aesthetic style, butterfly motif, and marking characteristics, it is highly attributed to the prestigious Saga Raden Nomura workshop lineage of Kyoto.
Estimated Era / Production Range:
Show Era to Early Heisei Era (Circa 1970–1980). This timeframe matches the modern elegant minimalist silhouette combined with high-end, mid-to-late 20th-century traditional craftsmanship designed for premium domestic gifts or fine interior display.
Item Condition:Pristine Vintage Condition.
The vase retains its deep, glass-like brilliant glossy shine. Meticulously inspected with absolutely NO scratches, cracks, chips, or lacquer loss. The original wooden box (Tomobako) is not included.
It is highly likely that this piece belongs to the
Saga Raden Nomura workshop (Kyoto).
This centuries-old Kyoto workshop is famous in Japan for its predominantly butterfly (Chō) motifs in motion against deep black lacquer backgrounds.
They typically produce decorative interior objects such as stylized vases (Kabinn), jewelry boxes, and high-end pens.
As it is a workshop with several artisans from the same family working simultaneously, they usually sign their work with the surname "Nomura," with the artisan delegating their individual authorship to the red seal (Hanko).
It is the most emblematic century-old workshop of its kind, operating since the late Meiji era (1910) in Arashiyama, Kyoto.
Historical records highlight that it is one of the few Kyoto firms that maintains a unified process: a single master craftsman handles everything from the base lacquer (Nuri) to the fine decoration (Kashoku). Its current leader, Master Mamoru Nomura, holds the state title of Certified Traditional Craftsman (伝統工芸士 - Dentō Kōgeishi) and the Future Grand Master award.

Antique or vintage items are sold in their original condition, as found, except for a superficial dusting. Items may have stains or variations in paint tone or material condition, which are inherent to their age and are preserved to maintain their antique character. We do not perform polishing or restoration ourselves; we wish to maintain the originality. However, after purchase, if you wish to have these services done, it will be entirely at your discretion.
Shipments are made with appropriate and sufficient protection. Large, heavy, or fragile items are meticulously packed with professional materials, using bubble wrap, double-layered envelopes/cardboard, and a sturdy box to ensure safe transport.
Note: The measurements are approximate and should be considered with reasonable tolerance for the objects, even more so if they are small (+/- 5 to 10%).
IMPORTANT: I offer combined shipping. Many of my items have free shipping if send together, and for the rest, shipping will be 50% or less of the cost indicated for each item if shipped together (large items are send individually only).

To pay, wait to receive the updated invoice with the combined shipping costs and then make your payment. I usually send the invoice within 12 hours or less, often within minutes (between 9 AM and 7 PM, GMT-3), even on holidays.
