Condition

The bowl has a noticeable lean, the degree of which varies depending on the viewing angle. The silver plating is thin in places, with areas of plate loss, particularly to the underside of the bowl. The exposed underlying metal is yellow-coloured. The areas of plate loss could potentially be improved by re-plating.

Description

A small silver-plated metal pedestal bowl, probably dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The circular upper body is raised on a short waisted stem terminating in a spreading circular foot.

The upper edge has a rounded rim above a continuous pierced gallery formed from closely spaced vertical rectangular openings. Beneath this is a broad decorative frieze worked with repeating stylised foliage, scrolling and flower-like forms, interspersed with groups of diagonal bands. Fine beaded borders frame the decorated section.

Two freely hanging ring handles are attached at opposing sides by rounded projecting mounts. Each ring has a textured lower section and a plainer upper portion.

The pedestal has a narrow central stem which flares towards the foot. Concentric moulded borders encircle the base, including a fine beaded band. The interior of the bowl is shallow and circular, with a small central circular feature corresponding with the stem attachment below.

The combination of pierced gallery, ring handles, beaded mouldings and revival-style foliate ornament is consistent with decorative metalware of approximately c. 1880–1920.
