Attractive vintage French edition, believed to date from 1924, from the Collection des Grands Classiques Français et Étrangers, Paris.

A particularly decorative copy bound with a gilt-decorated leather spine and striking red and grey marbled boards.

The volume is extensively illustrated with 81 engravings after 18th-century illustrations from La Fontaine en Estampes, together with 31 facsimile illustrations after drawings from a medieval manuscript and a portrait of La Fontaine after Charles Le Brun.

French-language text throughout.

The book shows considerable age-related character and wear. The leather is rubbed and marked, with wear to the spine ends and extremities. The marbled boards have rubbing and edge wear and the pages show general age toning and occasional marks. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.

Despite the wear, this remains a very attractive decorative and illustrated edition, particularly appealing for collectors of French literature, La Fontaine, illustrated books and vintage leather-bound books.
